Living with Coronavirus
Sunday December 26th, 2021
Yesterday I took down the numbers and went back to bed. Ill, not from Corona but from my underlying conditions.
Our “holiday”, which I do not celebrate, is nonetheless celebrated in my home by my daughter in law. She puts up a tree and lights, does presents with her family and has a more or less traditional, non-Christian, Christmas. This year things went a little differently.
My daughter in law manages a group home for disabled peoples. One of her employees (co-workers) had a C-19 close contact, followed two days later by a positive test. This means the patient they both care for, on different shifts, was exposed, possibly. So, Macy has ten days of Quarantine for Christmas. We are about halfway through that now.
So, we spent the holiday masked, Q’d and watching for symptoms in Macy, and testing and re-testing Macy. No positives to date and no symptoms to report, but the aggravation and stress of waiting reminds me of the early days of AIDs testing. Take a test and wait a couple of weeks, wondering if your dying in between. With Covid you test and wonder if you had enough virus for the test to catch, or did it dodge the test? Test again in 2-3 days and wonder in between.
So far so good. Macy will be home all week to fulfill Quarantine rules despite testing negative repeatedly. Fortunately, she can work from home doing all the paperwork and ordering the home requires. Actual patient care will have to be left to others.
Case numbers are way up everywhere, but fatalities are not. They have declined or remained static with few exceptions. That is good news that tends to indicate Omicron may not be as deadly as Delta, perhaps 1% or less rather than 2-3%. Such numbers are really early for Omicron, and it is a hopeful indicator, but not hard evidence. Deaths could simply be delayed; we still see an uptick from Delta wave which has a lot of people on vents nationwide.

This story shows that believers in the big lie, anti-vax Trump supporters and Q Anon believers, would rather believe their own government attacked them secretly with anthrax than admit they exposed themselves to Covid, even as it sickens and kills them.
“Attorney Lin Wood announced on Friday that podcaster Doug Kuzma, a supporter of former President Donald Trump known for his anti-vaccine stance, is in the hospital due to COVID after attending a QAnon-friendly conference in Texas earlier this month.
Wood wrote in a Telegram post that he received a call for help from Kuzma’s administrator, who said the Frog News Network host had been suffering from the disease and his lungs were not responding to treatment.
According to Telegram posts by Frog News Network on Saturday, Kuzma was placed on a ventilator early Christmas morning and was unconscious and unable to answer calls or messages. Frog News Network noted that the last contact with Kuzma was on December 19, when he shared a photo of ivermectin he had stockpiled before heading to the Texas event.
Kuzma attended the QAnon-friendly “ReAwaken America” event in Dallas from December 9 to 11. The event drew speakers and attendees known for promoting vaccine conspiracies and claims of 2020 presidential election fraud. The ongoing tour is taking place in several states, with guest speakers having included MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell and former Trump National Security Advisor Michael Flynn.
Some far-right attendees, including podcast host Joe Oltman, claimed afterwards that they had experienced anthrax poisoning at the event. On December 19, Oltman wrote in a Telegram post that he became ill. He later claimed that another attendee, Jovan Pulitzer, was also sick.”
The coronavirus that causes Covid-19, SARS-CoV-2, can spread within days from the airways to the heart, brain and almost every organ system in the body, where it may persist for months, a study found.
In what they describe as the most comprehensive analysis to date of the virus’s distribution and persistence in the body and brain, scientists at the U.S. National Institutes of Health said they found the pathogen is capable of replicating in human cells well beyond the respiratory tract.
The results, released online Saturday in a manuscript under review for publication in the journal Nature, point to delayed viral clearance as a potential contributor to the persistent symptoms wracking so-called long Covid sufferers. Understanding the mechanisms by which the virus persists, along with the body’s response to any viral reservoir, promises to help improve care for those afflicted, the authors said.
“This is remarkably important work,” said Ziyad Al-Aly, director of the clinical epidemiology center at the Veterans Affairs St. Louis Health Care System in Missouri, who has led separate studies into the long-term effects of Covid-19. “For a long time now, we have been scratching our heads and asking why long Covid seems to affect so many organ systems. This paper sheds some light and may help explain why long Covid can occur even in people who had mild or asymptomatic acute disease.”
While I worked on this, as Desmond Tutu died, alongside another 45,993 of our fellow humans who lost their fight with Covid. Of those 10,231 were my fellow Americans, and of those 34 were my fellow Mainers.
One quarter of the worlds deaths when we are a mere 4.5% of the world’s population, the definition of failure. Recall the vast majority of recent hospitalizations and deaths are among those who refuse to vaccinate, which makes them all unnecessary and pointless. Death by personal ego.
