We are not at peak yet

We are not at the peak of Omicron.  In 10-30 days’ time we will see that peak.  Like all previous peaks it will peak in one place and then another, everywhere.  Once again, I had to struggle to do this, it is just so depressing to watch your fellow humans ignore science and die pointlessly.

On the political front it is exactly the same.  This weekend the former POTUS said . . .  “The left is now rationing life-saving therapeutics based on race, discriminating against and denigrating, just denigrating white people to determine who lives and who dies, you get it based on race. In fact, in New York state, if you’re white, you have to go to the back of the line to get medical help. If you’re white, you go right to the back of the line.”

That is a blatantly racist lie to stoke fear into his base.  It has no basis in fact or reality at all, but his base is not interested in facts but in feelings.  Feelings he winds up, fear of the “Other”.  He is trying to give his base a reason to believe him and not reality, because they prefer the story.  The story he tells them gives them someone to blame.  The story he tells them fits their preexisting biases, and he will exploit every bit of angst he can instill.  He proved that on Jan 6.

Meanwhile Trump’s buddy Putin is saber rattling and threatening invasion.  North Korea is doing the same while Iran ramps up its nuclear capability.  Does no one but me notice these foreign acts somehow coincide with our midterms?  Like maybe these despots like Putin prefer Trump to Biden, and are acting as they are to make Americans “feel” threatened?  People who feel threatened tend to fall in behind despots and autocrats because they claim they, and only they, can fix it all up.  Which of course no one can.

More than a decade ago I postulated a problem.  A single gallon of water weighs 8 pounds.  The outflow from glaciers in Greenland and Antarctica are dumping far more water than Niagara Falls, constantly, under global warming.  The weight of all that water is entering the ocean.  Previously those uncountable tons of water weight were frozen into ice on the end of the planet.  Now they are liquid, and the laws of physics tell us it will tend to gather at the equator due to centrifugal force of the planets spin.

This means those unimaginable tons of water are now pressing down on the abyssal plains at the ocean floor, not on the frozen poles.  What effects might the redistribution of all that water weight cause?  I think we may have just seen it at Tonga.

As I worked on this another 50,839 of my fellow humans died of C-19, of those a disproportionate amount were my fellow Americans, 12,983, who lost their lives this week; of those 55 were my fellow Mainers.
